BBC STORYWORKS & SC JohnSON:
PLASTIC BANK BALI

Story

In Budiono’s community in Indonesia, people have just enough money to buy food. The 65-year-old sometimes worries for his children and 14 grandchildren when so many still have very little. Social enterprise Plastic Bank, turns community-collected plastic into recycled materials called “social plastic” which is then sold to companies - such as household cleaning manufacturer SC Johnson - who use the material in some of their product packaging.

Locals can exchange the waste plastic they collect from their locality for tokens, which in turn, can be cashed out for money or food.
